NFL Mock Draft - Round 1 Notes Casey 2009
– Detroit: Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia No surprise Stafford Booed? Huge contract with bust protection
– St. Louis: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor Again, no surprise. JS > Joe Thomas? Secondary return as guard. Great Orlando Pace replacement
– Kansas City: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU Richard Seymour v2? No nose tackle Glenn Dorsey trade in the works?
– Seattle: Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest Tatupu, Hill, Curry too expensive. Cover-2 fit? Worst scheme-fit for Curry
– New York Jets from Cleveland: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC What happens with Kellen Clemens? Trade to Cards? Sanchez can handle NY pressure Great pick for Rex Ryan No. 17 and 52, Brett Ratliff, Kenyon Coleman, Abram Elam to Cleveland What happens to Brady Quinn, Derek Anderson, Ratcliff to start?
– Cincinnati: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama Motivation? Monroe still on the board Character concerns. Fills a need.
– Oakland: Darrius Heyward-Bey Awful pick, 4th or 5th best receiver, Eugene Monroe on the board… Great athlete, not a great football player Donnie Avery but more expensive, less polished.
– Jacksonville: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia GREAT value. Replacement and upgrade for Khalif Barnes Could have looked at Crabtree
– Green Bay: B.J. Raji, NT, Boston College Ideal 3-4 nose tackle. Great value, BPA @ need position. Ted Thompson avoids Crabtree temptation for greater good.
– San Francisco: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech Great Value Jerry Rice esque Who plays QB? Shaun White? Alex Smith?
– Buffalo: Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State Great potential, undersized Orakpo still on the board? Weight issues, too light.
– Denver: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia Finally a starter. Super versatile, catches well. Value at 12, available at 18?
– Washington: Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas GREAT Value Fills need, BPA by far 2nd player on my board.
– New Orleans: Malcolm Jenkins, DB, Ohio State Need and value at 14. Jenkins may be able to play corner in NO. NO finally helps their secondary.
– Houston: Brian Cushing, LB, USC Had him here for a while. Good athlete, versatile. 2-down linebacker?
– San Diego: Larry English, OLB, Northern Illinois Reach, Reach, Reach Maualuga, Oher, Wells on the board. Good fit, bad value.
– Tampa Bay from Cleveland: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State Bound to happen, Raheem Morris tie. Overrated player, high ceiling Great arm, poor accuracy. No. 19 and 191 to Cleveland
– Denver: Robert Ayers, OLB/DE, Tennessee One-year-wonder? 3-4 DE/OLB Hybrid? Rare. Needed defense, good value. Everette Brown still on the board.
– Philadelphia from Cleveland: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri Great Value, need? DeSean Jackson clone? Good enough size, another target for McNabb. Explosive with ball in hands No. 21 and 195 to Cleveland
– Detroit: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State Matt Millen back? Pettigrew is good TE, but fills minor need. Oher, Maualuga, Jerry still on board.
– Cleveland: Alex Mack, C, California Good pick, parallel with Nick Mangold pick by Mangini in New York Not exciting, but effective pick.
– Minnesota: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida Character concerns? Can he play WR in WCO? Very versatile, RB, returner, WR, etc. Sidney Rice? Bernard Berrian?
– Baltimore from New England: Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss Good Value. Versatile lineman. Can he play LT? Ray Rice and Joe Flacco savior. No. 26 and 162 to New England
– Atlanta: Peria Jerry, DT, Ole Miss Ideal pick. Jerry is probably the best 4-3 DT. Penetrator, adequate value here.
– Miami: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois Best pure-cornerback in draft. Fills need, great value. BPA, probably. Character concerns?
- Green Bay from New England: Clay Matthews, LB, USC Good fit in 3-4 Hard Worker, athletic. Traded No. 41, 73 and 83 for 26 and 162 Overpaid for pick.
– Indianapolis: Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut Typical Bill Polian reach, akin to Edge over Ricky Williams Brown fits scheme very well. Brown is a workhorse, great complement to Joseph Addai.
– Buffalo: Eric Wood, C, Louisville No left tackle? Not a bad pick, Eben Britton and William Beatty on the board though. Not Max Unger?
– New York Giants: Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina Good WR, may never be great. Not red-zone replacement for Burress, perhaps better than Britt though. Team didn’t have immediate needs other than this.
– Tennessee: Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers Finally a WR in Tennessee. Britt’s an ideal fit for Vince Young and Kerry Collins. Great fit for Britt and Titans. Cringed over potential D-2 pick, relieved at conventional need pick.
– Arizona: Chris “Beanie” Wells, RB, Arizona Ideal scenario for Arizona. Big back, shifty, Bettis-esque. Great value at end of first round. Best RB in draft? Durability, character concerns?
– Pittsburgh: Evander Hood, DT/DE, Missouri Good fit at DE in 3-4. High motor, tenacious. Eben Britton, Max Unger on the board.
